Choosing the Right Paint for My Kitchen

When choosing the paint for your kitchen, you will have two main considerations: colour and finish. Let’s look at them one at a time.

Colour

Now you may want the same colour as the rest of your house for cohesiveness or you may want something different. Keep in mind that paint is easy to change, so if you want to add a contrasting accent wall in your kitchen, go for it. You can change it in the future much more easily than changing the floor or the backsplash. For resale value, pick a neutral colour. That is generally what buyers look for. For yourself, pick a colour you like because most people spend a lot of time in the kitchen. There has been considerable research on the psychology of colours and how they affect us. Green, for example, is considered peaceful, red is considered exciting, and purple is considered thoughtful. Darker colours are more dramatic, which is why we see them in dining rooms.

Texture

The next major consideration is texture of the paint. The shinier the paint, the more expensive it is, the easier it is to clean, and the more it shows imperfections in the wall surface. In contrast, the more matte a paint is, the harder it is to clean, the less expensive it is, and the better it is at hiding imperfections in the surface it covers. However, some people have clear preferences for certain types of paint, and that’s okay, too.

It's a good idea to use paint with at least a bit of a shine to it, like eggshell, in places where food may be splattered on it. Do you have kids? Then you may want an eggshell finish where people sit to eat.
